121 Financial Credit Union CEO talks PPP loan processing

So far, 121 Financial Credit Union has funded $7 million of its $30 million allocated for Paycheck Protection Program loans, and it expects to reach its cap sometime next week, CEO David Marovich said April 14. Marovich said the credit union saw about 400 applications before it had to shut down the portal last week to catch up in processing the applications and disbursing loans. “Once we get through this first round, we may be able to open it back up,” Marovich said. Applications for businesses applying to the program opened April 3. Self-employed and independent contractors could apply starting April 10.

121 Financial Credit Union is honored to be named a 2020 Community Impact Award winner by the Jacksonville Business Journal. Our CEO, David Marovich, sat down with the JBJ staff in October 2020 to talk about how our institution is working to live up to our reputation as "Jacksonville's hometown credit union." In addition to helping preserve 4,100+ local jobs in 2020 with our small business PPP funding, we also helped local nonprofits respond to the COVID-19 pandemic -- from funding food banks to helping the Boys & Girls Club launch a homework hotline for kids.

PODCAST: A better month-end close

At the end of every month or quarter, credit union finance professionals tackle the close process, or the preparation of the credit union’s financial statements for publication. It requires extensive research and reconciliation on the part of the finance team, and completing these tasks manually can be challenging. Nancy Wu, head of sales and customer support for SkyStem, says many credit unions experience pain points in their close processes. This is where automation tools can help to streamline the close process, removing inefficiencies and allowing teams to work more effectively together. For $551 million asset 121 Financial Credit Union in Jacksonville, Florida, implementing automation made the close process easier on the finance team. Chief financial officer Benjamin Munday says this led to smarter ways of working, improved morale, and happier team members.
